Summary
The Biological Mass Spectrometry Lab is characterized by a broad background in biochemistry and on the use of -omics techniques to explore biological processes and disease. The group leads research that continually builds on significant advances made in the application of mass spec to the analysis of biological fluids and models to study the mechanisms involved in diseases. The group has published more than 180 publications (H-index 30) in the fields of biochemistry, biology, analytical chemistry and medicine and contributed to the discovery of mechanisms of action of drugs, to identify new potential biomarkers and to identify new therapeutic targets. The main research interest is the combination of mass spectrometry techniques, biochemistry, in vitro, in vivo and animal studies to investigate cancer (pancreatic, breast, prostate, mesothelioma, colorectal, sarcoma, melanoma, etc.), autoimmune (rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, etc.), neurodegenerative (Parkinson, Alzheimer, ALS) and cardiac diseases. The group is also focused on the study of aging and related diseases.
The main field of research are focused on 1. Multi-omics approaches for biochemical phenotyping: proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics analyses of cell lines, tissues and biological fluids, data integration; 2- Biomarkers and therapeutic targets discovery: Proteomics and metabolomics to discover new biomarkers, biomarker validation with ELISAs. 3- Development and application of machine learning and multivariate algorithms. 4- Study of microbiota through metaproteomics and metabolomics, in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo. 5- Development of analytical methods, diagnostic kits and tests. 6- Analysis of environmental and food samples.
The research activities are funded by European Commission, Minister of Research, Minister of Health, AIRC, ARISLA Foundation, Regione Piemonte, PNRR funds and private companies.
